What is that QR Code doing on that Parsley Plant?

QR codes are literally popping up everywhere. A QR code is the shortened abbreviation for Quick Response Code. Basically, it is a barcode that can be read by smartphones or other mobile devices.

QR codes allow the creator to send specific information to the scanner and while they were originally used in systems for tracking inventory, more and more they are providing a means to redirect a user to a specific webpage or other online content. We’re beginning to see them regularly appear on items in our stores. Several of the Outdoor Power Equipment Companies, like Exmark are putting them directly on their Engines and Equipment.

But Parsley?

Seriously. I noticed the latest order of plants that we received from Bonnie Plants has a QR Code on the shelf information tag for each product.  It piqued my interest. I wonder where it went and what type of information I would receive when I went to it.

It actually goes to a mobile site that Bonnie has created which is very cool. First of all it tells all the basic information about the plant, but the “more information” is what I think is truly worthwhile. There are “Secrets to Success” which talks about preparation. Just about any project you do succeeds or fails in the preparation stage, but there is also warnings about possible disease or pests that can keep you from success.

There is a “Harvest and Use” section which tells you just that. When to harvest and how to use. For someone like me who has no idea about gardening… this is great (What would be greater with this online app is if you could set up alerts that could hit my phone when I need to do certain things like water, fertilize, harvest…)

And there is a “Try these garden companions” section that recommends other types of plants that will fair well in the same planting or will compliment the plant well. I could definitely see the value in this while preparing to purchase the plants.

Good job, Bonnie Plants.

So, all that said, we have a few fall plants out at the moment that you can still get in the ground and enjoy. We’ve got:

  • Boxwood Basil
  • Red Lettuce
  • Romaine Lettuce
  • Head Lettuce (iceberg)
  • Bonnie Hybrid Cabbage
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Cilantro
  • Curled Parsley
  • Italian Parsley
  • Onion Chives
  • Cauliflower
  • Red Cabbage
  • Savoy Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Georgia Hybrid Collards
  • Strawberries

We’re also already looking forward to spring where we plan on doing a little more than we have in the past with plants and seed. If there is something that you know you’ll need let us pre-order it for you. And don’t be surprised if you see some new items this spring. We’ve also been looking at decorative pots and planters, other outdoor materials, and specialty fertalizers and soils.
