Memorial Day weekend is upon us this coming weekend, and for you folks in the Gainesville, Georgia area, you know that means that the Brenau Barbecue Championship is this weekend also!
Last year was the first year that we attended the event. We’re not competing in the event (although I think next year we should try to do something for the fun of it) but we are cooking nonetheless.
We’ll be at the same spot we were last year and will have our Big Green Egg Tent loaded down with Big Green Egg products and accessories. Last year, we were positioned right next to Myron Mixon’s team. Let me tell you, the smells were amazing, and the food was better. We even were able to get in a picture with him.
In all seriousness, there is a lot that happens at this event. It has become a highly attended community event. Friday night, from 6 to 10pm, you can preview the teams and vendors. There wil be local musicians and entertainment, Crafts and artisans are around every corner, and of course there is a LOT of food and drink for the tasting. Saturday is the actual competition, but there are still a ton of fun going on. Gates open at 10 and the awards are at 5.
It is extremely relaxed. It is fun just to walk around and get tips and tricks from BBQ enthusiasts.
And it is all for a good cause too! There is a small entry fee ($10 Friday night and $5 Saturday) that directly goes into the local student scholarship fund.
For more information, check out the Brenau Barbecue Championship website.
We will see you there.
