No engines will be started, but on June 14th, speed will be on the minds of hopefully a lot of people in our Duluth Store. We are going to have our first (because we expect this to become an annual event) annual Pine Box Derby Grand Prix!
Why on earth would a hardware store want to have a pine box derby? Because they’re fun!
And Because we’re doing it for Cure Childhood Cancer!
Here’s the details. You can purchase a kit from our Duluth store for $10 which includes an entry fee for the race on June 14th. There will be 3 divisions of racing happening on that Saturday:
- Kids/Teens – We’re gonna have an 18 and under division.
- Adult – Everyone Else
- Vendor/Sponsor – We’re going to do a special division of racing just for our vendors. We’re expecting awesomeness from our sales and marketing representatives from brands like Exmark, Big Green Egg and Makita. We expect to see some really cool cars from this division… whether they are fast or not… that is a whole other thing 🙂
We will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd place speed prizes in all divisions, and we will also have prizes for best design.
100% of your entry fee will go directly to CURE.
CURE Childhood Cancer is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer in our lifetime.
They are an amazing organization. We all know folks who have fought or are fighting childhood cancer. This is an organization we can all get behind and support. They do incredible work for families during really difficult times.
Founded in 1975, CURE Childhood Cancer is dedicated to conquering childhood cancer through research, education and support of patients and their families. Since its establishment as a grass-roots organization, CURE has focused its efforts on improving the care, quality of life, and survival rate of children with cancer. The founders, parents and a dedicated pediatric oncologist, joined forces to support laboratory research that would translate into immediate care for children with cancer. Since that time, CURE has raised millions of dollars to fund cutting edge research at the Aflac Cancer Center Blood Disorders Service at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine. Through innovative programming, CURE also provides support for stricken families, providing them comfort and support during their time of devastating need.
Here’s what you’ve got to do. You need to get a car registered immediately. Being our first race, we are limiting entries to 50 racers in each division. Come into our store in Duluth and pick up a kit and entry form for $10.
We’re actually going to have 2 build days prior to the race if you want to come to the store with your kids and build together:
May 31st 8am-12pm
Learn basics of Racer Design and rules of the competition. Then it is time to get to work as you shape and sand car body. Prepare wheel and axle assemblies. Paint custom parts. Apply first coat of sealer/paint.
June 7th 8am-12pm
By this time, your car is fully sanded and painted. You’re ready for custom parts and weights. Tools available to weigh and attach all parts to car. Graphite can be applied, and if complete, you can test car on the race track.
The race will happen on Saturday, June 14th – The day before Father’s Day. Check-in will happen at 9:30am and the racing will begin at 10:30am.
We’re going to have a lot of fun at this event. There will be giveaways, great food, healthy competition and bragging rights are on the line!
Most important, we’re gonna be raising money for this great cause and amazing organization.
