Habitat for Humanity Hosts Skills Clinic for Women At Howard Brothers

We are really excited to host Habitat for Humanity on May 10th at our Oakwood Georgia store. We’re partnering with Makita Power Tools and Habitat to offer a clinic for women on the “Use of Hand and Power Tools.” The goal is to provide instruction, safety advice, and answers to any questions on specialty power tools as well as common hand tools. The event will take place from 9am – 12pm on Saturday the 10th.

National Women Build Week is held each year, the week leading up to Mother’s Day!

Why a skills clinic just for women? Habitat reports observing early on that newer women volunteers on home builds felt uncomfortable working alongside more experienced team members, mostly men, who had familiarity with tools, carpentry knowledge, or other skills that made them better prepared for the project. The challenge of overcoming this concern was answered with what Habitat calls its “Women Build” program. Hands-on clinics are relied upon for introduction to various skills and special on-site workdays are organized around teams made up of women.

Howard Brothers is sponsoring this local event with experts who will provide instruction, safety advice, and answers to any questions on specialty power tools as well as common hand tools. The public is welcome to drop by to see demonstrations. Anyone interested in volunteering for a Habitat home build, or other volunteer work, is encouraged to visit the “Ask A Volunteer” table at the Habitat tent during the event.

Screen Shot 2014-04-29 at 9.25.03 AM“It’s really amazing to see how empowering this can be,” says Executive Director Ann Nixon who began her volunteering with Habitat by working on a Women Build house. “Our gals seem to know intuitively where fellow women team members might need guidance. In short order our newcomers catch on and contribute at a higher level. It’s satisfying all round for the team. The Women Build program works, too, because women today are looking for a broader, more enriching life experience. Here we get to give back to the community by helping low income families acquire decent and affordable housing … while at the same time developing handywoman skills to restore and enhance our own homes. It’s at once rewarding and fun. We hope women who read about this event at Howard Brothers will come by and explore what is possible.”
